A TEXT POST

My Grandpa. My Hero.

My Grandpa passed away last night. He had been ill and suffering for over a year, gradually getting worse as time went by. His death wasn’t a surprise neither was it a shock as we had known for months that his health was deteriorating so rapidly that it was just a matter of time.

He, out of all my loved family members, was the biggest influence in my life. As an ex-headmaster of a secondary school he taught me the value of hard work, from such a young age he taught that with working hard, came great rewards.

I remember on more occasions than I care to know, him bartering with me that if I did all my homework in the morning, he would drive me to the beach so I could go surfing in the afternoon.

He knew that I was absolutely crazy about surfing (still am) so he would use that as his way of agreeing with me to do work in order to earn the right to enjoy myself surfing. Crafty, but it worked.

In the cold depths of winter while I was out in the sea, He would drive around in circles in a field to keep the heater on just so he could stay warm! but he never once mentioned it or complained, and would do the same thing for me the next day. That was Grandpa to a tee, He spent his life helping others and never asked for anything in return. Helping others was his own reward.

I have so many fond memories of Grandpa. Each memory I have of him has a life lesson learned somewhere. I have over 30 years of invaluable lessons I will never forget. From every spoken word, every action he took and how much love he gave us has shaped the person I am today. He’s a person I aspire to be, I always looked up to him. He was, and still is my hero.

I will always cherish one of the last times I saw him. We sat at a table in a restaurant and after talking at length about my job and what I do, he said he was proud of me. I tried to find the words to say that I was proud that he was my grandpa but for some reason, I couldn’t.

Grandpa, thank you for everything you’ve done for me, thank you for teaching me the value of hard work, thank you for believing in me even when I didn’t, thank you for enriching my life and most of all, thank you for just being you.

Whatever obstacle I face in my life, I’ll always think of you and know that you are right beside me. always.

I love you Grandpa.

Between Five Bells

If I’m willing to buy a bottle of wine based on the typography alone, I’ll certainly buy wine with a data visualization graph made with Processing.  The visualization printed on the label is unique to each wine based on eight characteristics, and no two labels will ever be the same.  Fantastic work by Nicholas Feltron.

Over a year after sharing a bit of process, the fruits of David Fesq’s labor and the label I designed for his wine are now available in Australia.
